If you consider the information received from a four year study of 11.5 million Medicare enrollees, you may notice that those over sixty five years old, exposed to fine particle air pollution from such sources as auto exhaust and power plant emissions, are at a seriously larger risk of breathing and cardiovascular illnesses. The study was sponsored by the nation’s Institute of Environmental Health Sciences which is an element of the nation’s Institutes of Health. It’s the biggest study until date about the connection between hospital usage for heart- and lung-related diseases & fine particle air pollution.

According to Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D, the nation’s Institutes of Health Director, “The info show that study participators over seventy five years old experienced even bigger increases in admissions for heart problems and lingering obstructive pulmonary illness than those between sixty five and 74 years of age,” It was exposed that even the tiniest of increases in fine particle air pollution led straight to cardiac arrest, chronic obstructive pulmonary illness, breathing infection, and increased hospital visits for heart and vascular illness. The study results show that little increases in fine particle air pollution led to increased hospital visits for heart and vascular disease, cardiac arrest, lingering obstructive pulmonary disease, and respiration infection. “The info show that study participators over seventy five years old experienced even bigger increases in acknowledgments for heart issues and lingering obstructive pulmonary illness than those between sixty five and 74 years of age,” asserted State Institutes of Health Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D.

Funding was supplied by the EPA and the nation’s Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, for research to be conducted at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg College of Public Health. If you have an interest in the results of the study, you’ll find them in the March eight, 2006 issue of the Book of the North American Medical organisation.

The study also said that there’s now a threat to the condition of the old from airborne particles, and recommends the setting of a state air quality standard that protects their health as much as is possible. David A. Schwartz, M.D, NIEHS Director related, These discoveries provide forcing proof that fine particle concentrations well below the nation’s standard are dangerous to the cardio and respiration health of our elderly citizens,” and continued to claim, “Now that the linkage between breathed particles and unfavourable health effects has been revealed, we must focus our efforts on knowing why these particles are damaging, and how these effects can be prevented.” Fine particle air pollution consists of miniscule particles of dust and soot that is less than 2.5 nanometers in diameter, which is approximately 30 times smaller than the width of a single human hair. The particles generally come from car exhaust, power plant emissions, and from such operations as burning normal fuels. Fine particles are dangerous as they could travel deep into the breathing tract, helping cause conditions like asthma and bronchitis.

Blood pressure is a serious problem and can lead to other ailments when neglected. The medical and dietary specifications are also important in monitoring a patient’s condition. It is the pressure at which the heart pumps blood to the other parts of the body through the arteries. People suffering from blood pressure need to keep constant track and maintain a record of the readings taken at home. These can then be shown to the doctor for better monitoring and medicinal modifications.

There are devices that can help patients measure their blood pressures and maintain the readings on a daily basis. The equipment required to take pressure readings are of two types, an Aneroid Monitor and a Digital Monitor. An aneroid monitor needs to be operated manually by pumping a rubber tube while the digital monitor can either be manual or automatic wherein the reading is displayed on a screen. The aneroid monitor has a stethoscope attached to it which makes it convenient since there is no need to carry a separate one. But it can easily be damaged during transit. The digital monitor is popular because it is automatic and easy to use. The one main disadvantage is that the reading may fluctuate if there are erratic changes in the heart rate or any other physical movement. Another form of blood pressure measurement is through an Ambulatory Device which records the readings through a period of 24 hours including the time when an individual sleeps.

When you buy a blood pressure monitoring device, it is advisable to get it checked with your doctor and also learn how to use it correctly, in case the instructions are unclear.

Before taking the reading for the day, it is important to follow a checklist for accurate measurement.
•Do not consume alcohol, caffeine or tobacco before measurement.
•Be relaxed; do not measure your blood pressure after exercise or jogging.
•Do not indulge in conversations or any other hectic activity before taking the reading.
•Use the washroom before taking the measurement.
•Follow the instructions prescribed while using the equipment chosen.

Blood pressure affects millions of people across the world, so it is advisable to have a measuring device at home to keep track of your blood pressure readings. It is now easy to measure your blood pressure at home as there are numerous devices available under different brands and you can buy the one which suits your requirement.
